“We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates… Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty.” – Jun’ichirō Tanizak
Relishing the opportunity to further collaborate with Jaz Jagdeo, the Edinburgh based photographer featured in issues one and two of boom saloon, we joined forces for a fashion editorial exploring masculinity, light and darkness – shot on location at Broadscope Studios.
Working as part of a team including Photography Assistant Megan Redden and MUA Shaun Lavender, we styled a series of looks which showcased Scottish design amongst international labels. Weighty heritage fabrics were juxtaposed with the light and movement of silk, exploring the interplay between rigidity and fluidity. Referencing Jun’ichirō Tanizak’s pivotal work, the editorial examines the singular standards of Japanese aesthetics whilst scrutinising our relationship to darkness and its ability to evidence light.
