Drawing learnings from the structures of our built environment, Reconstruction marries a selection of our most iconic features with newly commissioned responses from insightful voices around the world. Issue 001 brings together the Archive of Modern Architecture in Syria and photographer Eglė Kisieliūtė for a pressing questioning of the Eurocentric narrative which has long dominated the architectural space, and the unexpected compositions which can reframe our vision. Printed by Risograph in both Edinburgh and Athens, Reconstruction takes its form from architectural blueprints and comes tri-folded in two interlocking sections, on 170gsm Context Natural.
boom saloon is an independent publisher dedicated to democratising creativity for good.
We publish books and magazines, both in-house and for clients, exploring the connection between the arts and social change. Alongside this work, we develop community publications with people whose experiences and perspectives are too often overlooked or undervalued. We do this because we believe publishing can do more than communicate an idea. A book or magazine can introduce us to an intriguing new perspective, give us access to an experience we haven’t lived, challenge what we think we know and create space for people to tell their own stories, on their own terms.
Our model brings these things together. The publications we make, sell and share help sustain a wider community of writers, artists, designers, publishers and readers – whilst the income and support generated through our publishing work contributes to the time and creative capacity needed to develop community-led projects.
Every publication bought, read, shared or borrowed helps strengthen that ecosystem. So whether you’re buying from the boom saloon shop or borrowing a publication from our library, you’re taking part in a community that believes printed matter can be a tool for connection, understanding and positive change.
Thank you for being part of it.
