A Little Life [Advice] gathers cherished counsel from groups of people living with dementia across Edinburgh and Fife in a small-format cascading fold publication: made to be kept, handled, read and returned to. Published as Alzheimers Research UK reports that 1 in 3 people living with dementia in the UK don’t have a diagnosis – meaning many go without guidance, explanation or any framework for what comes next – A Little Life [Advice] shares words of support from those best placed to offer them. Touching on family, friendship, life and love, it serves as a lasting legacy to provide poignant guidance for many years to come.
Developed through co-produced creative writing, design and production workshops, A Little Life [Advice] is printed in-house on Q-Connect two-part listing paper in white and pink, with covers in Clariana Smooth Colour Plus 300gsm in orange, dark grey, pale green and purple. The publication comes bound with a foam band and is finished with silver eyelets and white and green paracord. It marks the finale of our work to rewrite the story of dementia, supported by each and every one of our members alongside the University of Edinburgh’s Community Grants.
With thanks to North Edinburgh Arts, STAND and each and every one of our contributors and collaborators.
1 in 2 of us will be directly affected by dementia in our lifetimes; it is currently the leading cause of death in the UK. In spite of this, the general public are largely unaware of the dementia journey and how this can look for an individual following diagnosis.
Many people with dementia feel their voice is taken from them and their true lived experience is rarely recognised or appreciated amidst a plethora of sensationalised headlines, medical jargon or scaremongering.
Within this landscape, we collaborate with people with dementia and, together, play with words to give voice to their experience. We then share these words across our print publications, online features, newsletters and events – centring lived experience and using this to increase empathy and understanding in wider society too often presented with a flattened, singular narrative of dementia focussed on incapacity, loss and inability. Our work redresses this, unlocking and showcasing what people with dementia can do before sharing this to rewrite the narrative by centring lived experience.
At this pressing time, please support this vital project by purchasing from our shop or becoming a boom saloon member, with our thanks.
