Filament // 010 began as an attempt to trace ripples for the Glasgow-based product design, engineering and innovation agency’s first decade. Born from the simple idea that great product design isn’t just about products, but about people, this ten-year anniversary publication reimagines the corporate milestone as a tactile study of impact. Within its pages, Filament // 010 considers what it means to unlock potential and how “tiny changes” can resonate across communities long after a product reaches the shelves.
Throughout the publication, we encounter a web of stories: from inventors chasing hunches to designers chasing perfection. We see this in the journey of Sunstore, a solar power technological experiment harvesting light to revolutionise life for off-grid communities in South Africa; and in nooku, a playful air quality monitor that helps families navigate the invisible world of pollution through empathy rather than alarm.

Each element of the design mirrors the agency’s “invention factory” ethos – from the rollfold inserts and detailed sketches of custom mechanisms to the quiet, internal reflections on the joy of making. Whether exploring the invisible infrastructure of TUAL’s portable EV chargers or the democratisation of trust through ValiCash’s microscopic authentication, the publication celebrates a decade of micro-expertise. The result is not a book to be read in haste, but an archive of potential realised: a slow encounter between engineering, design thinking and the human stories that drive them.

With this, Filament // 010 demonstrates that good design sparks meaningful change – to someone, somewhere. It is both a reflection on what has been built to date and a roadmap for the next decade of socially conscious innovation, proving that transformation is often strongest when it is quiet, personal and deeply meaningful.
